The Significance of Shepherds in the Bible

Connecting the Old and New Testaments

The Bible tells us a single story, weaving together threads from the Old and New Testaments. Discover how the Old Testament points to Jesus from our study of John’s Gospel: The Truth.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1).

These ancient words reach across the centuries to touch our hearts, revealing God’s shepherd heart long before His Son proclaimed, “I am the good shepherd,” in John’s gospel. Throughout generations of war and peace, famine and prosperity, pain and comfort, the surprisingly tender words of Psalm 23 have offered security and rest to God’s people no matter their circumstances.

But humans have always struggled to respond to the voice of their Shepherd.

Through the Old Testament, Israel’s history was filled with darkness: sin, rebellion, and exile. Using the image of a shepherd and his sheep, God expressed His sorrow as He longed for His people to repent.

In Jeremiah 23, God rebuked the people’s leaders using shepherd imagery to express his care and concern.

“Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: ‘Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,’ declares the Lord. ‘I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture.’” (Jeremiah 23:2-3a)

Again, in Ezekiel, God judged the shepherds of Israel who did not care for the vulnerable among them. And in an incredible moment, He declared, “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them” (Ezekiel 34:11b).

Jesus, the Good Shepherd

Yet these words were followed by more than 400 years of silence from God. Israel was left occupied by Rome under the care of misguided Pharisees.

And then, in a lowly stable, the silence ended. God Himself came down to earth to seek the lost and redeem His people.

“I am the good shepherd,” Jesus proclaimed, “I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:14-15).

Jesus didn’t simply claim to be like a shepherd, He claimed to be the Good Shepherd. This is the same Shepherd of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, who gathers the remnant of His flock, searches for His sheep, and promises to protect and care for those He calls His own.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one” (John 10:27-30).

In Jesus, the promises of Israel’s prophets were fulfilled.

Jesus, Your Shepherd

But God did not come to save Israel alone. Jesus said, “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16).

Through these promises in John, the words of Psalm 23 come back to us. Jesus is our Good Shepherd, our source of hope and eternal life.

Through Jesus, we lack nothing in a world that leaves us longing for more and cannot satisfy our deepest longings. Amid an anxious news cycle, we find rest and contentment. When circumstances change, the Good Shepherd holds us fast. How will the promise of Christ as your Shepherd change your heart and shape your mind today?

  1. God is teaching me like I have never seen this word before. I am 77 yrs old and have been a Christian since I was 13 yrs old. I have read all of John several times and been in at least 1 adult SS class that went through it.
But this year I am feeling like I have been right there with the disciples learning from Jesus personally. He is teaching me to stop being a cry baby, looking for recognition and respect and to really be a servant. Jesus did not tell us about it He “demonstrated” it. The more I humble myself and serve honestly the more He fills me. Hallelujah!

  2. Thanks and glory be to God! Each day, there is always new truth He gives us from His Word. I like too much the 17th chapter of John. As a teacher of Sunday School, I always teach my students to read and meditate on this chapter when they are down sometimes in their daily life so that they will be comforted because it is also a prayer for them.My students are 17-18 years old.
But when I study it this year, God allows me to discover that Jesus had prayed for me before I was born!!! It is very comforting for me to know that. I know that Jesus loves me, He has saved me on the cross. But when I discover that before I was born He prayed for me, it emphasizes and reminds me that He loves me before I was born. When I pray with fellow believers, we pray for each one of us, I know that they pray for me as I pray for them. But knowing that Jesus had prayed for me before I was born is another special story! It makes me to praise Him deep in my heart, to thank Him more. Praise and glory for Him pour out from my heart even silently. Thank
    You Jesus, thank You Jesus.
    Amen! Amen!

  7. My mother passed away first week of BSF. She would often use John 10:10 to define life problems and resilience. Studying John has been such a blessing . Jesus’ way of preparing the disciples for His absence on earth has brought me comfort and peace in my grieving process. It has also taught me so much I didn’t understand about Jesus before. I also became a first time grandmother after my mom’s death and I have a new perspective
about that stewardship role via this years study of John. Its so important to teach this truth so that it came be known by the ones we love so they will be prepared to carry on to live and teach it as well. I am in such awe and love with the Lord that He knew this year was the year I would need BSF to teach out of the book of John. The Word is applicable and can reach in a place no one else can get to.

Since, starting this class, I’ve been shown much of the evil deceptions that prevail in our world, but, just like the chief priest and Pilate, their human ambitions failed to see the truth, yet still took steps to fulfill God’s plan for our redemtion.

John 11:25-26, “I AM the Resurrection and the Life…he who believes in Me though he die, yet will he live.”

Because we believe (trust in, cling to, and rely on) our Savior, as His Body, He will resurrect us to Himself to live with Him forever. Thank you, Jesus !!

It was not only a walk of faith but a real lesson on letting the Holy Spirit direct my every step especially the things He wanted to teach the kids through me. What a joy to see us engaging weekly on scripture as we pondered each question with an open mind and an open heart. The women who I teach with have been an incredible support system as God pruned me this year. Kind of like stakes around me as I grew new sprouts. 30. Thank you for this wonderful study in john’s gospel. This is my first time doing a BSF study A few months ago a wake up call from Revelation to ask Jesus for eye salve and return to Him was given to me. I knew there was a balm in Gilead and and physician in Gilead who could help me see. I wanted to be in an international group of men learning and sharing together. We have that with men from Kenya, Singapore, Nairobi, Hong Kong, USA.
The study has been enriching and renewing. john is an excellent evangelist and shepherd who brings us to Jesus in every I AM and miracle he presents. The gospel has come to life by the Holy Spirit These are real people and events with Jesus showing Himself as He is. My understanding has increased and grown brighter. As I relearn review and remember this is who Jesus is …to me … to these brothers and all other learners.
Learning from the other men has opened up the international fellowship of Christians we are part of around the world.
This is like opening a treasure chest full of jewels and the preciousness & value is shining on Jesus and His glory in every I AM.

Have learnt on the 3 trinity, each with His work but one. Knowing that great love compassion that God has for me even though am not perfect convicts me & now through John am better. In the world today believers go thro hatred just the way Christ did but once I remain in Him & repenting my daily life sins, He will stand & fight for me. He is my good shepherd & the only way. I lost my job in November, and then we studied John 6, where Jesus provides for all the people’s physical needs and offers to give them even more for their spiritual needs. I could hear his gentle chiding, “Do you not believe I will do as much for you now?” And he did provide. Just this last month, my mom died very suddenly. But John 10 and 11 have given me great hope and peace, and enabled me to share the gospel with my unbelieving family at her service. So thank you for the study that equipped me for this year of growth and trials.

    • In 2016 & 2017, my husband, Jim, and I went through the BSF/Book of John study. It literally helped us persevere in our faith & remain strong during a major medical crisis where Jim could not eat and drink for 42 days.

How God’s Word spoke to us as Jesus said He was the bread of life and the living water! Many believing friends, including our BSF study partners, prayed for Jim and he had a miraculous recovery! Praise God!

Fast forward to this year’s John’s Gospel: The TRUTH study… God’s timing is perfect as we also lead an apologetics group study at our church (apologetics is the intellectual defense of our Christian faith). To stand up for God’s Truth we need to know it and study it. This study has been so helpful in helping us not just learn the truth, but share and explain it to others.

  41. Changed in such a way that I have to think seriously about situations where tried to be conservative with the truth as a way to save my own skin. The Gospel has only confirmed to me that I should take courage in telling what is true even if the outcome means I will be implicated because when I reflect on when Jesus told Simon Peter that he would deny Him three times before the cock crowed has such a powerful and lasting impact on everyone who has committed to follow Jesus. Telling the truth might mean being hurt but it is the TRUTH and let it be told. In the circumstance in which Peter denied Jesus is equivalent to lying although he meant it with good intentions, it was an utterly wrong thing to do. It will remain a lifelong lesson for me as a follower of Christ.

  63. This season of studying John again (I have taken it before at least once) was a true eye-opener for me. The 4 chapters before Jesus’ arrest were so very special, esp. chapter 17. I don’t remember ever absorbing so clearly how much we are loved by the Father, thus also by Jesus and the Holy Spirit. There were several verses talking about how the Father loves us, and I feel that more clearly now, knowing that if I feel some pruning, it doesn’t mean that I am far from God; on the contrary, it means that He loves me and is shaping me. I appreciate the explanation of the Holy Spirit, and after not thinking about Him very much in my past, I finally see the role he has had in my life, and I need to reach out and accept it. I don’t have to feel distanced from God when I commit a sin, thinking He doesn’t want to hear from me. Rather, I know now that since I have been washed thoroughly once for all time, all I need is a little mini-wash as I confess. God doesn’t want me to feel worthless to Him about those sins I will commit every day–He just wants me to confess, knowing how much He loves me. I could go on and on, but these are the salient points. I have been a Christian for over 60 years and never felt so secure in Him as now. Thank you for all you do, BSF. Karen

  72. This is my first BSF study and I was gently “nudged” by my mother-in-law to join this year. I’ve was raised Catholic and attended Catholic school but had never felt connected – to church, religion, or God. In fact, I felt anger towards religion, and toward those who seemed to “get it” when I struggled so badly. This has been the most eye opening experience for me!! I’ve loved every minute of BSF, the people I’ve met, and my own study time where I’ve learned more in this short time than I have my entire life. His Word is eye opening and wonderful!! It is broken down so that even someone such as myself can follow along and not feel angry and confused like I previously did. The women in my group are insightful, and they help me to see different perspectives that I wasn’t capable of seeing at first. Through BSF I can honestly say for the first time in my life that God is speaking to me and I WANT to hear Him. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our beautiful relationship!!

He spoke to me his love for me and Oh what joy filled my soul. My eyes were opened, my heart changed, and I ran to gather others to come and see a man who told me all about myself. I am still running, leaping ,and sharing about the love of Jesus to anyone who would be willing to listen, come and see, and be captivated by the One who changed my life forever.

  79. The book of John has given me a new view of the love of Jesus for his own. Over and over he loves and directs his disciples knowing they would not fully understand everything until after he was crucified and risen. Jesus knew what the Father wanted him to do and made choices that only kept him in the path the Father prepared for him. This is my prayer that I am as diligent as Jesus to seek Gods will in everything I do to stay in the Fathers path for my life. And pray I can be an example and encourager for others to be determined as well.

At age 10, I accepted the Lord as my savior. God gave me the gift of servant hood. I’ve always wanted to help others. Through this study of JOHN, I realize I’m not an outcast. I am God‘s chosen. Over the years, as I have gotten closer with God, the more He has revealed to me. I love how God makes me feel now.

    • In the Gospel of John, I have concluded that the Word of God is Truth. Jesus is the Word, both living and written, who established the foundation of all absolutes in the universe. The ultimate question that is asked in which John answers is: What is Truth?
Pilate stood face-to-face with consummate Truth asking, “What is Truth,” then missed the point due to fear, compromise, and harden heart. I too stand today before the Lordship of Christ with the challenge to allow his truth to be the “moral compass” of my life. Fortunately, the faithfulness of his mercy and grace, the impact of His Words, and the operating presence of the Holy Spirit continues to solidify my heart, my focus, and my purpose in life to follow Him who is The Way, The Truth, and The Life! 100. The Way

The way, the path, the road ahead-
who knows which way to go?
    Many voices loudly call,
The darkness tries to breach Light’s wall,
But flees like night at dawn.
There is a way that seems so right,
    But pride precedes a fall.
Who will mark out the road ahead?
    It’s easy to get lost,
And lost pays out the highest cost,
But there’s a straight and narrow road
    Illumined by the light.
Signs of Life to clearly guide
    Along the one true way.

    The Truth

There are none so brave as Truth.
    Truth defies the enemy,
    Lies leading astray blindly,
    For lies refuse to see.
Truth stands at the door and knocks
    Never changing, always free.
As it was and is to be
    Truth beckons you and me.
Truth is life and lights the way,
    Something darkness cannot touch.
    Never lacking, giving much
Love and safety calls to us.
    Jesus is more than enough,
    Offering to all the Truth.

    The Life

Departing from the life we’ve known,
    Beholding all that’s new.
    Arriving, yet pursuing on.
The wind calls us to move
From where we’ve been to where we are
    To places yet unseen.
We know not where the wind will blow,
Yet peace the wind will bring
And love beyond our wildest dreams,
Insight for what was once unseen.
The way is new. The road we’re on,
A mystery, a Song we sing.
We move in awe toward Paradise.
Jesus our way, our truth, our life.

To know Christ through John’s own relationship with Christ Jesus, my love grows more deeply and understand that Christ continues to pray for me but yet draws the line in the sand to indicate HE truly is The Way, The Truth and The Life. I have always loved the Lord, but I have not always been truthful to Him, others, or even myself. In Celebrate Recovery, it is called denial. I now call it lying. This semester, God has whispered, nudged, pointed out, and shouted, ” Just be honest!”. It has totally changed my life. No more going to the Spirit of Truth with evasion, half truths, empty promises, or evasion. It has been an awakening and a relief! God forever loves me! When I sin (and I still will)…stop hiding, denying and lying! By quickly seeking His forgiveness in truth, it allows me to let go of the chains that bind me and to experience the joy of God’s love. It is so freeing not to have to cart around those rusty old links!!

All three work in concert with one another to transform us into the image of Jesus, guaranteeing our salvation and eternal life.

  116. I really got a lot from this study of John’s Gospel. The way in which John recorded the events of Jesus’s character, as the Good Shepherd, the light, the Bread of Life, the Vine and all these were done in the framework of the Old Testament as when Moses stood before the burning bush and asked God the question , the Israelites of whom you commissioned me to lead out of Egypt want to know your name, and the Lord of creation said….”I AM!” Now in John’s Gospel he wrote that Jesus said many times the I AM statement, I Am the Good Shepherd, I AM the Light, I AM the Bread of Life, and so on. The thing that struck me in the Gospel of John is when they, the Jewish leaders and the Jewish guards came to arrest Jesus in the garden and Jesus asked them,”who do you seek?” and they said ,”Jesus of Nazareth!” and Jesus said,….”I AM!” and they all fell to the ground!!!!! WOW!!! Is good stuff or what? This is, I believe the only Gospel that mentions this. So after they got up Jesus asked again …”Who do you seek?” and again they said ..”Jesus of Nazareth.” and Jesus said ..”I AM He….” Here is a good example of the New Testament reaching back to what the Old Testament had given the truth about God the Great I AM

    John 19:19,21 NKJV
[19] Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. [21] Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.”‘”

The Jews just didn’t want Jesus to be their king but in fact, from the Hebrew initials of the whole Title, they didn’t realise that they had crucified their יהוה, their Lord😂

I I have loved reading about Jesus’ ministry with the disciples, helping them grow in their own faith in Him as mine has. It was truly meaningful reading His intimate prayer with God in John 17, that He included all future believers was remarkable. I’ve read through the Bible many times and done other BSF studies, however, this year it has been life changing for me and my husband both studying John and discussing God’s faithfulness in our lives. Thank you BSF for such a wonderful study!!

  168. The truth I found in John Gospel is enormous. The biggest one God revealed is the spiritual rebirth of the spirit of God.

Lazarus’ resurrection marked the disciples’ spiritual rebirth. The spirit of word (Jesus) together with the spirit of truth (the Holy Spirit) give birth to the spirit of God inside of disciples. They were born of spirit of God at that moment. Then the Holy Spirit, like the blood we inherited from our mother will dwell in the new born spirit of God during Pentecost.

Just like the disciples, the spirit of word together with the spirit of truth will give birth to the spirit of God inside us, and then we will receive the spirit of truth (the holy spirit) not long after our spiritual rebirth.

That is why ‭‭Jesus said in John 3:5-6 “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.’

Jesus must have intended that Mary and John should share as he called from the cross for Mary to go with John rather than her other children. So John’s new testament Pentateuch has a wealth of truth for assurance of an eternal living with the risen Jesus Christ. He is risen!

This has had a profound impact on my spiritual life as well as my social life as well. I am more able to open my heart and mind to experience the honest evidence of God’s power and love in my daily life. 233. It has stirred my heart to remember what I have through Jesus Christ. Sometimes, complacency takes a hold of me and this study has taught me new things as well as stirred up the things I already knew. This is my first BSF Study but it will not be my last.

    • I accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was seven years old and I am now sixty-two. This is my first time to so thoroughly study a book of the Bible. Hands down the best study experience I have ever had. It has helped me to know Jesus in a way I have never known before and to see connections with the totality of His Word that I had not seen before. I am eagerly looking forward to the study of Revelation!

  239. There has been one particular scripture from John that has continued to resonate within my soul. It is John 3:27. God said through Apostle John’s pen what came from lips of John the Baptist, “A man can receive NOTHING unless it has been given to him from heaven.” Shazam!

I have found such peace in His sovereignty over my life. The good, the bad, even the very ugly have all been filtered through the loving fingers of my heavenly Father before it ever lands in my life. Knowing the character of God such as that He is only good, all wise and holy, full of grace and mercy, enables me to let my life rest in His trust worthy hands. I know that whatever He allows in my life is ultimately for His glory and for my good. (Romans 8:28)

What comfort! What peace! What an amazing God He is that knows us so completely and fully and allows us the blessing of knowing Him through His Son Jesus.

I am so eternally grateful for Him granting me the ability to participate in BSF. I know it came straight from the Father’s heart to mine. To God be all the glory!

  242. More clarification of Jesus and the Holy Spirit as they relate to my growth in faith. Appreciate John’s gospel in relation to the other three.

  243. I have really been blessed by learning more about the Holy Spirit – it has been a real comfort. Also by rereading John and slowing down to study each week, I have see such compassion in Jesus and I am comforted by that.

  245. To be honest with you, the Gospel of John has increased my wanting to study more intensely. I’ve been reading the scriptures for quite a while, but now, I have more zeal to “eat more nutrients from His Word than ever before.” Each of the 4 Gospels, as well as the entire Bible comes to life more’n ever. That, my friend, has been just what I needed. I’m grateful to BSF for the many fires they’ve lit in me.

    • Like so many others who weighed in here I am feeling a difference in my understanding and relationship with Jesus. The study of John and fellowship with my BSF group has impacted me deeply. I have grown in awareness of how God has created everything in my life. That was a vague concept to me before. Knowing this completely changes how I look at life and what I am able to let go of. Reading John at the level of detail this study provides I am truely seeing how much love and care Jesus had for his disciples and how that translates to all of us.Thank you BSF.
