How to look for God’s guidance in every situation

Whether we face a life-altering decision or are simply making everyday choices, we long to discern God’s wisdom.

Proverbs 16:9 tells us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” So how do we know what steps to take?

While there is no simple formula to apply, we can call upon God for His guidance in every situation. The Bible gives us helpful spiritual tools and guidelines to follow.

Expectant prayer

Our first step toward discerning God’s wisdom is humbly seeking the Lord in prayer. Psalm 25:9 reminds us to pray for God’s guidance with humility: “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to set aside our own limited judgment. The psalmist says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

James 1:5-7 gives clear direction on how to pray for wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”

Through prayer, we lean upon God and depend on Him as we seek His will in every situation and decision. When we bow before the Lord in prayer, we realize our insufficiency and understand that God is the source of everything we need.

God’s Word

Along with prayer, God offers guidance through the Bible. Scripture reveals that God promises to guide and provide wisdom to believers who seek and surrender to His leading. God always upholds His Word and never leads us on a path toward sin. Instead, God always directs us toward His righteous ways. Psalm 23:3b reminds us “he guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”

Wise Counselors

In seeking God’s direction for our lives, we are not alone. God provides wise counselors, leaders, and Christian friends to prayerfully offer wisdom. Seeking wise counsel can offer further confirmation of God’s direction after a time of earnest prayer and Bible study. Proverbs 11:14 says, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors.”

Inward peace

When we take our need for wisdom to God in prayer, He often gives guidance through a settled inward peace. Conversely, an inward check or unsettledness should give us caution about proceeding. God’s way provides unexplainable peace, even when following His direction brings challenges.

Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

While we cannot fully know the mind of God, He delights to help us know the way we should walk in this life.

Please pray for me as I have a tenant that has promised to leave in 11 days. I hope there is no need to get the law involved, because she is a tricky one (and she is a believer) Thanks in advance for your prayers. I say yes and amen to you sharing these rich promises. Blessings!!

  15. Love this article, but I am interested in more thoughts on Biblical support of “inward peace” as it pertains to individual decision making. I understand that we receive peace from the Lord when we are anxious, and that we have peace when we trust in Him, but I am not sure how the Scriptures provided teach that we should feel an “inner peace” when we ask God about a specific direction He wants us to go in our lives (as the article is about), and take that as a sign.

Is there a Scripture reference that teaches that when we seek God’s specific will for our lives that He will provide us with an inner peace if it’s the direction He wants us to go?

Thank you for your thoughts and clarification on this!

  16. Good morning and thank you for this God given message. I stumble on it online and it was speaking to me directly. I am currently passing through so much that I am feeling like I have a mental illness, depressed or Biopolar. Nothing gives me joy. I have lost my paying powers, I can’t pray again seven when I want to pray. My mind is buried in so much that I am unable to spare 1 min to pray. I go on my knees just to realised I lack the words or direction to pray. I need a counselor or someone to help.me out of it. I don’t want to continue to pretend like all is well. All is not well.

    • Praying God’s protection and covering over your mind and heart, Mariam. Our Father sees you and knows what you’re going through. He will help. Please trust and hold on. Scripture reminds us:
“‭‭Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
      Romans 8:26-27

Just continue seeking Him. I will be praying for you, Mariam.

    • I had to break it down to this: I sat down in my favorite rocking chair that I had used many years before to rock my children. I repeated over and over “BE STILL and KNOW THAT I AM GOD”. Special emphasis on each Capital Word. Reach out a lifeline to someone that is Spiritually grounded in God Word. This NOT something to handle by yourself. You need help, reach out, contact someone in your church or community!

    My Prayer for Patience
Help me Jesus, to understand that I can’t rush that which I have no control over. I must place it all in your hands. In your capable hands, all will work out for my good. Perfect symmetry in all things that you manifest. “But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand”. Isaiah 64:8. “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” Proverbs16:9.
With thoughtful attention, my best interest at heart, and the wherewithal to make things happen, you Lord, will do so in your perfect time. “He has made everything beautiful in its time”. Ecclisiastes 3:11.
In the master’s hand my life must reside, That I may fulfill my purpose and time on this earth. “Be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10.
    Amen
