My love of reading began early in life. My grandmother taught me to read when I was five years old. She and my grandfather lived right across the street from us when I was growing up. Many times I would grab my pillow, walk through our yard, rock-jump across the creek, look both ways before crossing the street, then run down my grandmother’s gravel driveway, across her stone bridge, through her back porch, and into her kitchen. I can still hear her voice welcoming me into her house. In fact, I can never remember not being welcomed by her. She taught me to love books by reading them to me.  

Looking back, I believe those reading times with my grandmother were divinely inspired. While I can’t remember the specific year that I confessed my sin, claimed Jesus as my Savior, and invited Him to live in my heart, I do remember that after that decision I began to have a strong desire to read my Bible. So I did. All the way through—from Genesis to Revelation. And that began a lifelong love affair with God’s Word, strengthened by my years in Bible Study Fellowship. 

My love of reading, studying, applying, and obeying my Bible has led me to the deep conviction that it is more than just great literature. It’s supernatural! It’s God’s living word! It pulsates with life! How could that be? What makes the Bible so unique? The answer to those questions leads us straight to the Holy Spirit, who makes God’s Word come alive as He speaks to us through its pages.

Peace through grief 

While the Bible is a manual for possessing a fully blessed life, it’s more. Although I don’t hear an audible sound, there are times when God speaks directly through the printed page into my heart. His Word has comforted, encouraged, directed, rebuked, strengthened, and sustained, while giving me peace and hope. 

For example, on August 19, 2015, my husband of 49 years moved to our Father’s house. While I knew with sweet, blessed assurance he was safely in heaven, my heart had a hard time letting go. I had been his caregiver 24–7 for three years. It was extremely difficult to have that role come to a screeching halt in a single moment. As ridiculous as it sounds, I was worried about him. Was he really, truly okay?

The Spirit didn’t let me struggle long with these emotional thoughts before He intervened. He brought Philippians 1:21 clearly to my attention: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Of course! Death for Danny was gain. Of course, he was better off!  

I felt somewhat foolish for worrying. But then my next unspoken query was, What about me? The Holy Spirit led me to the next verse: “If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.” A strong sense of purpose seeped into the depths of my being. I knew without question that God had taken Danny to something much better and that I still had work to do. Even with tears on my face, I was filled with peace.

His Word has comforted, encouraged, directed, rebuked, strengthened, and sustained, while giving me peace and hope.

Peace through change

Getting adjusted to living by myself after 49 years of marriage included putting my children at ease concerning my safety. Even though my husband could not have protected me during the last few years he was in the home because of his physical decline, somehow his presence gave my children a sense of peace. Not too long after I started living alone, the Spirit whispered a promise to me from Hosea that I shared with them: “I…will make them lie down safely” (Hosea 2:18, NKJV). 

When my doorbell rang at two in the morning, I knew God would keep His promise. While it was unsettling, I was not afraid. My dog started barking wildly, adding to the chaos and confusion. I threw on a robe, went to the door with my dog growling and lunging, and found a sheriff’s deputy standing on my front porch. He had received a false alarm and wanted to make sure I was okay. I assured him I was. 

Peace through uncertainity 

There have been other times when the Holy Spirit has seemed to speak, giving me a promise that has not been fulfilled, which has challenged my faith. I reexamine and pray over the promise, asking, Did I misread it? Did I read into it? Was it a promise God truly gave me or one I had just named and claimed?  

Recently I had a crisis of faith triggered by a promise I thought God had clearly given me but that proved over time to be unanswered. I felt foolish and spiritually naive. Then the Spirit seemed to whisper to me, “Therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you” (Isaiah 30:18, NKJV). I knew His promise would be fulfilled, just not according to my time. My faith rebounded as I chose to trust His way and His time.

The Spirit’s whisper

The previous examples are just a few of the Spirit’s whispers to my heart. Would I have made the same decisions or received the same comfort without what He said? Would I have had the same perseverance, courage, guidance, and wisdom if I had not read my Bible, listening for His voice? I don’t think so.  

Yes, I would have survived. But like many others, I would have been just guessing my way through life, afraid I would take a wrong turn and very probably doing so. Instead, the Spirit’s whispers have enabled me to live with energetic confidence, making very few costly mistakes. 

The Bible is God’s living word. He speaks today through it, but how many of us are listening? As you read God’s Word in BSF this year, would you choose to open your ears and listen for His voice?

    Thank you for always writing just what I need to read. I too lost my husband of 44 years in 2021, although not a long care season, his death was sudden and brought on by Covid. My daughters and I were so blessed, Jesus took Joseph in his arms 45 minutes after his stroke. We never had to make the hard decisions many were burdened with during Covid. I found myself a little lost but filled with joy as I was now able to serve the Lord in new and exciting ways. The enemy still creeps around trying to cause me to doubt but with the Lord’s covering I am able to continue on in Jesus’ name.

  6. Oh! I forgot to give Praise to The Lord for The Graham family. I came to know The Lord Jesus through my reading of Dr. Billiy Graham’s book: “Peace With God” and the faithful leading of my Sunday School Teacher, Mr. Richard Lavelle at the age of 15 years. Also, in later years, I worked as a volunteer at Samaritan’s Purse with The Operation Christmas Child Ministry in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was my privilege to go on a distribution trip to Nicaragua to give O.C.C. Shoe Boxes. Oh! What Love to share with the children there.

Group Leader here in Abbotsford, B.C., Canada. I count it all joy to be involved in God’s Word in this manner. At age 85, I am yet learning with a continued desire to share what I am learning.       I too have been widowed 13 yrs, I share the same things you spoke of. My hubby passed at 47yrs of age of Pancreatic Cancer. He was 6 ys younger than myself, and in hindsight thought we’d grow older together.
      I miss him and my parents badly. My Girlfriends in Christ have given me strength to go on living. I believe these news letters will give me a enormous amount of strength, and I to look forward to them. Peace be with you…. Melanie

  13. Anne, my circumstances are different from yours. However, my experience with the Word of God coming completely alive through the voice of the Holy Spirit is the same. You have encouraged me that I am not making it up but that God is using His word to comfort me and to lead me along.
    I have pretty recently learned the verse, Isaiah 30:21 and am holding it close to me.
    “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'”
    I am determined to listen to the Lord, Almighty and to not try to figure it out on my own.

  14. This message from Anne Graham Lots encouraged me, as I also cared for my husband of 55 years, who eventually had double amputations before going Home in 2022. Shortly afterwards, I started back in BSF. God’s Word has been my comfort and strength, along with the fellowship of the dear ladies in BSF💖

  16. God is so faithful. My husband went home to be with Jesus three years ago – we had been married 57 years. God interceded in so many ways. Our daughters were able to spend quality time with him before he passed and he did not have to suffer long from a fall, but went into eternity within three hours.
    Thank you for your encouragement. I have been in BSF for many years and God’s Word is new every morning. God has given me many opportunities to share my story and I praise Him every day.

  17. I enjoyed this blog, it encouraged me as I have had similar times of doubt waiting for God’s promised to be fulfilled. I was impressed to find that Anne Graham Lot was a Leader in BSF. I am on my third BFS class I started in the 80’s the study of the Letters of Paul, then life and family became my priority. I am happy to say I have Put God at the top of my priorities again. I studied the Divided Kingdom last year, so glad I did. This year studying John I love it!

  20. Thanks for sharing about how God whispers to you. He did the same when my husband passed 5 years ago. He told me to consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds. At the time we had a discussion about this particular scripture, then I had to stop and consider, We had 10 long years together, we had 3 children that he brought to the marriage, I had 6 grandchildren that only know me as mema! I had a lot to consider joy!!! Learning to listen more and obey!!! Thanks again for sharing. A

  21. Thank you Anne for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I too am widowed for fours years now. I thought it odd that I didn’t experience grief, at least not at first. I knew without a doubt where my husband was so I was just mostly happy for him. As a matter of fact, he was nonverbal for over a year until our last time seeing each other. He read Psalm 37 to me without any problem. He passed right after that. My next God assignment was to care for my three grandchildren. Their parents had separated that same day. It gave me another focus and purpose. I read to then a lot and see them almost every day. I’m enjoying BSF and the fellowship with other women. God is good!

  28. I go and tell others about Jesus everyday when I am out and about . I ask The Holy Spirit who HE wants me to talk to what HE wants me to say for His Glory .   34. Thank you Anne, this is encouraging. 2X this year I have heard the Holy Spirit prompting me. First was just “Be still” It has helped me to be willing to wait and listen for his leading. Last summer I wanted to know Jesus better and I heard “What questions did Jesus ask?” So I spent the next month writing down every question Jesus asked. It shows His patience, how He opened peoples minds, how He Loved and cared for each one. I’m still learning how to share with others by asking and listening. Thank you so much.

    • The Graham family had a great influence not only me, but the entire family. I have grown to love and respect them . Just like Ann I read my bible, all by myself aged 10. My mum taught me to read and then gave me a bible and asked me to read the book of Ruth. I have never put it down. God’s word is my main sustenance. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

BSF has helped me see that the Holy Bible is so much more than a collections of biblical characters, it’s God’s revelation of Himself as He interacts with His people.   40. Today I read the above blog. I feel God had me click on it to read and comfort me.
    A little over a year ago, my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. He couldn’t be cured but his doctor felt with treatment he could have a good quality of life for a year or more, But, that wasn’t the case. The night of his first treatment he was called home. I found him on the floor and I struggled with not being by his side. He was not afraid of death and looked forward to being with his family and friends whom had passed. I know he is in a much better place, free of pain and with his loved ones. Reading your blog this morning gave me peace and a reminder that he is in a much better place. Thank you so much!🙏

  42. This is my first year studying with BSF. What’s blessing it has been to me. I am SO grateful that there is child care at my location– not just child care but a full Bible teaching and my kids have been so enriched by hearing the word of God from these God-fearing women.
    What a blessing for this mama of 4 to get 2 hours of time studying and reading the Word with wise women who all have one goal: to know and love the Lord!

  43. BSF has been a life changer for me. It started with Covid when study became online. Before that I couldn’t attend and never had an opportunity to meet with like minded sisters. Sometimes I feel God knew and answered my prayers in most unexpected circumstances.

  46. WOW! The best word of expression that comes to my mind about BSF. Reading the WORD in detail and depth has opened up a new chapter in my life. Although, I was raised in a Christian home, I have learned through studying with others, answering all those questions, and listening to others has opened newness in my life. We are studying the Book of John this semester. I am finding little tidbits of information that I never knew before. I am able to see Jesus as He really is. I love the way He expresses His findings to all the people in John. Before Abraham, “I AM!”

      I also was a 24/7 caregiver for my husband of 40 years. I had exactly the same questions about him even though I knew he was home with our Father. Then I questioned about myself. Without the assurance of God’s word I would not have the peace I gained.

  49. I studied and was a leader for BSF for 8 eight years. I loved reading, as well as studying the scriptures. I will have to say, there is a difference between reading and studying. I read the Bible for years, but studying it brought much more meaning and life to it. Recognizing that the people in it was just like you and me, everyday people, with failings and weaknesses. We need not fear our faults. God is always there ready to forgive us. When doubt disrupts your vision, return your eyes to their proper focus and keep believing. Recall some of your favorite Bible verses that calm you and give you peace. I do. It works every time. Peggy

  61. Thank you for this post. I lost my husband of 51 years and my 97 year old mother in the same year and the hole is large. God is good and has provided calm and peace which I sorely needed. Jeremiah 29:11-13 is such a comfort. Even your words glow with your love for Jesus.

    • Carol, I read your posting on BSF and felt a similar connection. I lost my husband 7 years ago this December 14th. I also am caring for my mother who will be 97 January 13th. As a widow I see how God is showing me how to let go of the pieces of myself that I lost when my husband passed. So much of who I was as a believer was shared with my husband and now I must navigate that loss and become the instrument of God until my journey ends. I too find such peace in His Word. Sheilah

Please join me in praying for my daughters marriage, 3 beautiful little girls are hurting, along side her husband who is completely broken.He is so faithful, I will choose to trust Him.At times I feel like hugging my bible as tight as I can, much like a child holds to their favorite stuffed animal or blankie. He is my comfort!!!

  66. I never knew love before until I met Jesus. That past faded away, Jesus, now, was my future.
    Anne and her Father, Billy, spoke so beautifully about Jesus, their lives reflected that love. It is beautiful. I love Anne’s books, her words are a reflection of her love of Jesus. To soak in the Word of God, brings repentance, healing and health to the soul and heart. There is love in His Word, I recieve it and believe it because it has healed many wounds and brought joy even in the waiting.

  70. These past couple of weeks have been difficult for me. My 94 yo mom died on 12/20, then I sustained a groin injury which is very painful and has me using a walker to get around. I felt very abandoned by God, but knew that wasn’t true. Then yesterday God provided solutions to two situations which I could not imagine how to navigate which left me overwhelmed by God’s love and benevolence for/to me.

    We are never alone and as I worked on this week’s lesson, Jesus as my Good Shepherd, I was reminded that he and he alone has all that I need. As I lead my group this next week, I know there are many losses over this break, so I pray with can rejoice in God’s goodness to us and not the pain we have felt.

    Thanks to all at HQ for what you do to allow this ministry to go move forward, I know your work is not always easy or joyful, but you are Christ’s soldiers in the battle.

I lost my husband of 49 years in March and I thought that I had turned a corner in my grieving until our children’s birthdays at the year’s end and the holidays. I know that my joy comes from the Lord. I’ve lived that also through being a caregiver to my husband. Still I feel intense pain and loss but this day I know God has a plan for me. Thank you.       • Lois I have been a part of BSF in Oregon for the past 3 years and found it so meaningful! I thoroughly enjoyed getting into the Word. It challenged me and reaffirmed my faith that God is a loving God who cares deeply about each person! Thanks Anne for your part in establishing this ministry!!!!

    • I have also found Gods word speaks ! I lost my husband almost 12 years ago. And He faithfully gave me a promise in Psalms 16:11 that has sustained me in my walk on a new path. So many times he has led through His Word. How blessed we are.

    • Tanya, my husband of 55 years passed away in June of 2022. That September I started back in BSF. It was definitely the Lord leading me. The fellowship and focusing on God’s Word, was the comfort and encouragement that I needed. But even more, it allowed me to share and encourage the other ladies, and not drown in my grief. God is so good!

  75. my sister lost her husband just one month ago, it has been very difficult for her. The holidays were emotionally difficult for my dear sister. Although, she’s trying to be strong I can see her pain and sadness. God has shown his faithfulness, mercy, love and compassion thru many people that
    love her. It reminds me of the verse
    In Ephesians 3:18b-19 NIV “ to grasp how wide-and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God”

  78. Thanks Anne, Your message was wonderful! I sent it out to our family. We have several young grandchildren who love reading as well. Some of them are beginning to read the Bible. Our adult children have made a commitment to read the Bible this year as well! I began in BSF in 1979 in Fargo’s first class and continued in BSF where ever we have lived. I’m enjoying studying John this year in Lake Geneva , WI area. My neighbors gather weekly at our home to study God’s written Word too! God’s Word gives me His perspective on life and power to love and obey Him!

  82. I was not saved until I was 45. I was born again on Sept 7, 1997. Anne’s message hit home. Since I was saved I cannot get enough of reading the Word. I love BSF and its structure for learning. The Holy Spirit has opened up God’s Word to me and it is a wealth of wisdom. It speaks to me every day. I love that Anne says the Holy Spirit speaks to her heart. Now I feel my job given to me is to reach people like I use to be. Thinking I was saved when I was not. I write articles and post them on my FB page. I spoke about prayer to our ladies group. I think I do better speaking to a group of people than one-on-one. Not sure why. But I love talking about God’s Word, about Jesus, about salvation and about prayer. Thank you Anne for your message.

  83. The loss of a spouse has been difficult for me yet joyful, knowing as Mrs. Lotz says, it was hard to let go but gain. I know God will never leave me, and that I can rely on Him and BSF to grieve in a healthy manner. And as her father once quoted, “One day you will hear that I am dead. Don’t believe that. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address, and gone into the presence of God.” Thank you Mrs. Lotz for your encouragement through your writings and ministries.

  85. The Holy Spirit timing is life-changing. I’d just finished my OT and NT reading for today and my prayer for guidance for application for my life. As I began checking my mail, there was this awesome blog from Anne about “Listening to His Voice” which reverberated how God’s words are powerful and life-changing. I needed to hear every word.   90. I had only signed up for BSF last week and was not aware of blog emails. This was a God-send, His voice I needed to hear today. Eight years ago both my husband and I (God spoke separately to each of us) received a scriptural promise from God concerning our lost daughter returning. The enemy has been lying and whispering to me it was only my heart’s desire, not God’s word. But God. He spoke again today to believe in Him, His promise, His Word. Thanks for this devotional. As we go on year 13 of her walking away from her faith, I will still trust and pray.

Some days are difficult but God speaks to both of us as we have our daily prayer and bible reading and discussion together. We are amazed how God has blessed us throughout the years of our marriage and now allows us this connection with Him on this earth.   94. How do you find the way to God? I believe he’s there, I believe he does amazing work and I believe I need in him in my life. I just don’t know how to start. I’ve tried to read the Bible and I struggle understanding so I set it aside.
    I love to read people’s messages and I always think “I want that, I need that”.

      he said repent and believe
      the bible enables us to see GOD and his attributes, to understand our sinfulness, and to KNOW that we need a saviour.
      go to GOD through jesus christ tell him you repent , want to turn away from your sinfulness, and are trusting in what jesus did for you. jesus lived the life we should have lived(perfection) and died the death we deserved(took the wrath)
      thats how you can get right with GOD
      i will pray for you that you can cut through the “god talk” and repent and trust christ

    • Michelle. I’d like to recommend a great study guide written by Max Lucado called “Experiencing the heart of Jesus”. I used it some years ago studying with my granddaughters. In studying about Jesus you will also see the great love God has for you by giving His only son for us. There are so many more truths you will learn in future studies but I believe if you start by loving Jesus and His words you’ll have a wonderful foundation to grow your faith.   103. This blog spoke strongly to me this morning. My husband of 28 years transitioned into heaven in April 2022. It was our anniversary. I was his caretaker full time for the last 12 years. He was a miracle. For 26 years he lived with the diagnosis of severe emphysema. I am walking through this same journey and this morning I started to read in Hosea. Thank you for this blog. It is confirmation that God is with me every step of this journey. I will continue to seek Him in His Word. For the joy of the Lord is my strength.

This is why I love BSF. One not only has the opportunity to learn of God through His Word, but to go deeper with God through the application of His Word in obedience to the Scripture being taught, even in the midst of life’s struggles, many of which are shared in the small groups.   110. This comes so timely to me because I lost my second daughter on the 18/8/23. It’s not been easy for us as a family. A girl who would have turn 14 by 9/9/23. A girl full of life, her presence brings life to everyone in the family and the extended family. Her absence have created a very big vacuum for us. She could sing, make friends easily, a strength to her elder sister they were just two we have as our children. It has been easy a told for us. Please uphold us in prayers for God to give us understanding why she had to live us so early like that at her prime. God to comfort us and relieve us the pain.

  120. I heard Anne Graham Lotz in person once. It was apparent to me that she was filled with the Holy Spirit. Her message was so well put together that I could not believe anyone listening to her did not feel the power of her message. I could have listened to her for days although her message was only about a half hour. She is a Godly woman , and I can believe that what her father said of her was very true. I was blessed to have heard her then. I think her article for BSF were words I needed to hear.
