Lessons from the Disciples on Community

Todd Wethall

BSF Chief Ministry Development Officer | Sep 1, 2023

Joining a Bible study group can be intimidating. You may be wondering: Will we have anything in common? Is this a safe place to share openly? How are we going to get along? These are great and natural questions. To begin, remember that our sovereign, all-knowing, and always-present God brought you and your entire group together.

Jesus is good at that—bringing people together. In fact, He’s perfect at it.

Consider how He brought together His disciples. Did you ever wonder what was going through their minds? They probably didn’t realize at first that they had the perfect group leader. Jesus’s first followers may have had similar questions to ours: Who are these people? What baggage do they bring? Will I even like them? Will they like me? How are we going to get along?

As we look ahead to the upcoming study of John’s Gospel: The Truth, the disciples’ first days with Jesus provide guidance and encouragement as we gather together and draw closer to our Savior and one another.

{

Our sovereign, all-knowing, and always-present God brought you and your entire group together.

Invited by Jesus

In John 1:35-42 we read about Andrew, originally a disciple of John the Baptist. With simple words, Jesus invited Andrew to “come, and you will see.” Andrew literally followed Jesus and responded by telling his brother, Simon Peter, “We have found the Messiah.” Through simple invitations, God grew a community of faith.

You may have been invited to BSF by a friend, been encouraged by a spouse, or heard about BSF through your church, the internet, or even this blog post. In any circumstance, this was how God invited you personally to “come, and you will see.” Jesus Christ, who was in the beginning with God (John 1:1), personally invites you to follow Him, believe in Him, and have eternal life through Him (John 3:16; 5:24). Faith-filled and transformative community always starts with Jesus’s invitation.

Known by Jesus

According to John 1:43-48, the day after Jesus invited Andrew and Peter into discipleship, He extended the same invitation to Philip with two words, “Follow me.” Like Andrew with Peter, Philip could not wait to tell a cynical friend, Nathanael, about Jesus. As Nathanael approached Jesus, before he could say a word, the Messiah revealed He already knew Nathanael perfectly.

Scripture says God knows us before we’re even born (Psalm 22:9-10; Jeremiah 1:5; 1 Corinthians 13:12). Our character, interests, pursuits, and loves are no surprise to Him.

Each BSF member comes with different experiences, interests, desires, and knowledge of God’s Word. If you look closely, any group is a fascinating group! Week by week, as we share together, we can learn something new about the world, about one another, about ourselves, and about God. Approach your group with an attitude of curiosity—to know and be known.

United by Jesus

The first disciples included a clique of fishermen; a cynical Nathanael; a doubting Thomas; a spontaneous Peter; a contemplative John; a zealous Simon; and an unpopular tax collector, Matthew. This was a group that, from the outside, did not fit. But together they would witness Jesus’s miracles, listen to His teaching, and experience His death and resurrection. Their lives and relationships with one another would be completely transformed by the gospel.

What about your own discussion group? Whether in a room or on Zoom, tens of thousands of groups around the world are filled with men or women, young and old, varied in backgrounds, gifts, talents, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and personality. All broken, yet in Christ redeemed and united by the Holy Spirit through faith in Him. Christ brings unity to a diverse community!

Whether you are new to BSF or are a seasoned veteran, consider this new year, this 30-week journey through the Gospel of John, as a new opportunity. Like Jesus’s choice of His disciples, your discussion group is no accident. God has planted you in this group in this season for a purpose. In this deliberate moment in His story, God is calling you to draw close to Him and to one another as you engage with His Word together.

  5. I am excited to embark on my second BSF study of John. I have learned through BSF that the Bible is a living document. While the words and the truths found in it may never change, specific verses speak to us individually as our life circumstances change. My prayer is that God’s Word will show me new ways in which follow Him, unwavering in my faith, and relying on Jesus alone to give me the courage and strtength to remain obedient to His Word.

  8. Through my spiritual journey, I’ve discovered that engaging in Bible study programs like BSF has significantly deepened my comprehension of the Scriptures and strengthened my faith. This has resulted in profound spiritual growth and a closer, more intimate relationship with God.

BSF goes beyond just studying the Bible; it fosters a sense of community and fellowship among its participants. Within this supportive environment, I’ve had the privilege of openly discussing my faith, sharing personal experiences, and forging meaningful relationships with fellow believers. The structured study materials and curriculum offered by BSF have greatly facilitated my systematic engagement with the Bible, enabling me to develop a comprehensive understanding of its teachings.

One notable aspect of being part of a group is the sense of accountability it provides in my spiritual journey. Engaging in group discussions and committing to regular study sessions has motivated me to be more consistent in my Bible reading and reflective practices. This commitment has not only increased my biblical knowledge but has also helped me grasp the historical context of the Scriptures and their profound relevance to modern life.

As I continue on this path, I eagerly anticipate immersing myself even further in the word of God. I earnestly hope that the guidance of the Holy Spirit will continue to draw me nearer to God’s divine will for my life, enriching my spiritual journey with each step forward.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been back to BSF since Covid shut everything down. It has been a year since my precious daughter passed in 2022. I debated on whether I was ready to go back to BSF this year, but I didn’t sign up. A few days ago, I got a call from a group leader telling me that I was enrolled in her group! My husband told me that Jesus signed me up…so I am going!! I am nervous about returning. Please pray for me.

    • Nancy, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve lost your precious daughter. I too have “lost” one of my two daughters as well as her two daughters, my grandchildren similar to the prodigal story in the Bible. She has cut me out of her life for 2 years now. God; however loves us all and He has our back. BSF is extremely important to me to maintain my strength and Jesus and the Holy Spirit will help us get through our trials and tribulations!

I’m still learning new things and I’m feeling more connected to the Holly Spirit and closer to God since God intervened in my life in a miraculous way and pulled me out of my bad marriage and brought me here to Houston. In fact, I have just finished writing and publishing my memoir “When God Intervened” on Amazon. It’s mainly a testimony to my relationship with God.

  21. A lady in BSF brought me to salvation unknowingly by giving me a cassette on John. I listened to it in a personal drive to the Beach. I had found God in 1985 but was struggling/seeking to find Jesus…. The first Verses of John opened my eyes and my faith began. That night a woman called me and asked me if I wanted to accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and instructed me to get on my knees and prayed with me. Every person was an Angel sent by God to me, undeserving sinner who through the grace of God only I’m saved ….. since 1988 Ive been going to BSF most of the time. It continues to save me. My husband goes with me and was a leader the last Revelations. Friends go that I’ve invited. I love BSF! We zoom now in our Senior years and find it pure joy to study the word together

  71. I have been asked several times “ who authors BSF Studies?” I am not clear on the answer to this question. Is the author Todd Wethall? Also I have been hearing from BSF long timers about how the study has changed and moved in a liberal direction. Could you please clarify why there has been a loosening of standards that defined BSF?

    Reply
    • Dear Mary- thank you for asking! Todd is part of the team that produces BSF studies – expert writers and theologians from around the world work together to produce BSF materials. There is an extensive writing and review process to ensure that our studies remain true to God’s Word. To learn more about our core values and statement of faith go to https://www.bsfinternational.org/about-bsf/

This is what BSF believes about the Bible:
We believe that the 66 books of Holy Scripture as originally given are in their entirety the Word of God verbally inspired and wholly without error in all that they declare and, therefore, are the supreme and final authority of faith and life.

    • Mary, I have known about BSF for 30 years but only after retiring could I participate. I find that the studies are very true to the Word of God. But I heard stories about dresses/ skirts being required, rules about no participation if lessons are not done and more. Perhaps the old timers you have talked to are thinking of those more cultural or legalistic ideas, rather than whether or not Biblical truth is being upheld. I would not compromise on God’s Word or Biblical truth, but if more young women with busy lives come stubbs they don’t have to wear a dress- well, God forbid that it stands in their way.

They are a life-changing tool that allows you to learn, apply, and remember what should be important in all of our lives. Thank you all again and may God continue to bless all of you.

i think if the GL is too defensive not for the reason of the truth but personal stand than its not very helpful to invite new comers to BSF

The goal is all inclusive unless its such destructive to the position of BSF purpose of Bible studies, any GL could be more friendly towards members who may have different views on the interpretation and applications of the Bible.

As a GL, I wrestled every week with uncertainty regarding How was I going to lead my men. I felt inadequate and in way over my head. I talked with my wife about quitting, and prayed for I don’t know how long.
One night our Lord spoke to my heart, He said LOVE YOUR MEN! Very simple, I allowed the Love of Jesus to flow through me, to my men, and from that moment on, enjoyed every moment we spent together, on the phone or in group. Looking forward to this years trip through John, as we share God’s word in out lives with each other.

  130. Hello Todd,

I was wondering why do we not have the Notes first and use our knowledge from them and the Bible to answer our lesson questions. Normally like in school we read the text first and then answer the questions/test we do not get the test first and later get the text to read. I normally want to move on to the new lesson , not necessarily flash back, for me that causes confusion I am trying to concentrate on the next lesson. Just my two cents worth.

    Reply
    • Hi Barbara, What a great question. One of the reasons the notes come after the lesson is so that you can spend time in God’s word relying on His Spirit to speak to you as you study throughout the week. Then, when you unite in discussion with other ladies who have done the same- it is amazing to see what the Lord has revealed. The notes and lecture supplement and fill in even more afterward. One of the best things about BSF is that the approach is designed to help you hear from the Lord and grow in your relationship with Him instead of just studying about Him. Blessings to you this year!

      Reply
    • I found by going over the notes, I left myself open to what God’s Word had to say. By reading the notes, it reinforced what I learned from the lecture. I find it interesting to see how people get different meanings from the same verses

      Reply
    • Hi Barbara. It does seem confusing at first and this format may be why BSF is so unique and life changing. When I joined I had the impression that I really wasn’t qualified to read and interpret the Bible because our minister seemed so knowledgable , even going into the deeper meanings of words and how they don’t translate to our language as richly as they were meant to be. The group leader I had encouraged me to pray, read and contemplate what God may be saying to me! As it turns out, the Bible is His way of speaking to us and revealing things about HImself and in the process, things about ourselves. For me it has been so exciting to know I can get to know Him and have a relationship with Him, feeding a desire to grow to be more like Jesus. I am not the same person I was. The notes and lecture are amazing at filling in details, but hearing God speak to me and to other women in the group who may have ‘heard’ something else when they read the same passage has shown me how personal He is.
The recap of the previous week helps remind us of where we left off, but more, gives us time to express and share our response to the notes and lecture. It is another opportunity to hear something you may have missed as well as prepare you for the current week. In school we were there to learn facts, but I hope you find that in your reading, studying and interacting with your group you are beginning to hear His voice speaking to you too!

      Reply
    • Great question, Barbara. Since the ministry’s inception, BSF has encouraged members to take God’s Word in for themselves as God reveals Himself personally to His people through His Word. This is the first of the four-fold approach. Then, you share in discussion group what He has shown you in your personal time with Him and learn from one another (iron sharpening iron), before then getting more insight from the lecture and then the notes. In the end, each week, you get a good progressive layering of God’s teaching in personal study, discussion, teaching, and commentary. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful new BSF year in your study of John’s Gospel

      Reply
    • Barbara, you don’t normally get the answers to a test first? Right? (The Notes give the answers thoroughly) The homework is for you to spend time with our Lord Jesus, looking for the correct answer. God speaks to you & us individually. We all are at different stages of our lives. It’s nice to hear the experiences other people are going through because our Lord & Savior helps all of us in different ways, bc HE is faithful!! The Notes are the “re-caps” backed up with Scripture HIS WORD so we don’t miss anything. Praise God for HIS WORD!

      Reply
    • I agree with Carrie. About the notes and text should be first:

      Reply
    • My understanding is that we use the text alone to answer the questions to the best of our ability, asking the Holy Spirit to guide our study. When we search the Scriptures by ourselves we learn and grow. Then, in class we hear from others who have also done the homework and studied, so we gather more perspectives and sometimes we have to sit in the uncomfortable tension of “I don’t know.” Then, we get more insight from the lecture and finally more of the complete picture from the notes. I have found this way of study very enriching and a good way to learn.

      Reply
    • Hi Barbara. that is a logical question to ask. and indeed, many have asked it in the past. In my experience and in the plan of the creators of the lessons, we come to realize that the first sweep thru the passage is designed to lead us to communicate with God and to sit and listen to Him. The questions are designed to reveal to us what we already know and can find in our first pass thru. We will always have a limited understanding of what the significance is or can be, practically, eternally, etc. and that is pointed out to us as we then are seasoned with the notes which then often add deeper significance and understanding. Once this is revealed to us, when we accept the fact that we don’t fully understand the beauty of Gods’ Word and work, we can be amazed and add that to our store of knowledge and understanding. When we wonder and ponder first, discuss and get even more light on the passage thru the lecture, we can then build on that with the notes to clarify even more, the deepest truths. I hope that you will dismiss the idea that the questions are test -like but rather like windows thru which the light shines thru once approached. Isn’t it wonderful that, as we discuss in our groups, we can practice putting Gods words and thoughts into our daily vocabulary and dialog. I do want to emphasize the word ” practice”. Its one thing to know and believe, its another to verbalize it clearly to help others hear and understand. Will you trust the process as a great learning method for now and review the introduction of the 4 fold study/revelation approach of God unique to BSF ? We will join you in this. THANK YOU LORD, AMEN !

    • I was also confused at first until I started doing the lesson like BSF tells us. I would try to find answers in the notes or lecture. But when I started reading the scriptures alone to answer the questions it all began to make sense. The notes and lecture added depth to my understanding but the scriptures were my study text. I highly recommend the BSF way now. I am on my third study and only learned the correct process in the second study. God bless you as you study His Word.

In 2016, I was in my 2nd year of BSF study with my dear friend, Laura. We were studying John.

Laura was diagnosed with a rapidly growing stage 4 cancer during the 7th week of our study. She was hospitalized within days. I was given permission to record the weekly lectures and I would share them with her in the ICU. She was so encouraged through the Word. She went home to be with Jesus, 4 weeks later.

She testified that she could bear the pain and suffering because Christ suffered for her.

  141. It is through the ministry of BSF that I surrendered to the Lordship of Christ. I was invited by my boss. That was way back in 1994. I had been avoiding to make a decision for Christ all my life until I joined BSF. The 4 fold approach turned me from a bystander to a participant in the Kingdom of God!! I dropped out 4 about 3 years but the book of Isaiah brought me back and I cannot countenance not being in BSF.

    • Ha! That invitation is the best “raise” a boss could ever give! Thanks for sharing this beautiful story.

  143. A friend from church invited me three years in a row. I told her I was too busy with other studies. I finally jumped in on the study of Revelation with my husband 8 years ago. Since then, our walk with the Lord has grown tremendously, our marriage has been fortified, and our lives have been changed! My husband is a group leader and I am a hostess who loves to bring others to BSF. One full season of BSF is like five small group studies, except we are
communicating with God directly instead of just hearing it third person. I am a songwriter and find that writing and singing helps with memorization. A BSF leader shared a sheet with the attributes of God on it. I have been so inspired by God’s Word and what I am learning, that I professionally recorded this song. I have shared it with others, I would love to share it with other BSF participants. Any suggestions?

    • Isn’t it wonderful when we can be in God’s Word together? Whether with our spouse, child, neighbor, friend, or co-worker, our earthly relationships can be centered on eternally significant things as we draw closer to our Savior at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

1970s in original women’s group in Houston, Texas. Rejoined in 2021 partially in order to fellowship with my brother in Washington state, doing the same study. We are both in our 80s and it is a blessing that we can share this study through in person and online groups.

  145. Really appreciated this message and the perspective it provided. I am a new participant to BSF so the message was especially relevant and reassuring to me. I really appreciated the use of Christ’s gathering of His disciples as a way to view the new individuals I will be meeting and studying with. Looking forward to our start date on September 11th at BT McAllen.

  147. I was a member of a 8 week study on Ephesians in 1979 or 1980 to see if there was an interest. I fell in love with God’s Word, completing that study and the then 5 year venue. After a few years I challenged my son in another city to engage the the 8 year cycle which he did and I joined for that period also and have never stopped. BSF is the best. It has changed my life.

  150. This year’s study of John’s Gospel will be the 4th or 5th time in a BSAF study of the book. In some ways it’s like “Again?!!” ; and in other ways it’s “I wonder what God will unfold in this time through.”

    • Going into Genesis a couple of years back, I wished it was a book I was less familiar with. I too thought “again?” But the reading and the lessons applied to things going on in my life then, and I know Gods hand was there holding mine.

  156. What a encouraging and thoughtful invitation Todd has written to each of us. He sets the stage for us to be open with expectation to not only who Jesus is, but who each member of our group is. Also, thank you Todd, for basing your invitation upon Jesus and His invitations- right out of the Scriptures.

I would like to be in the same group that I was in the last two years. We know each other and will only have to get to know the new ones who join us.

  172. Yes God exactly knows each person by name and the reason why He has brought us together as a group. In something common to nothing in common we keep growing, just because it was Jesus who put us there. Bible says, “Not by might, nor by strength but by my spirit”, says the Lord. Looking forward to a new & exciting journey with our group this year…

I love BSF and my involvement as a GL has exposed my weaknesses and God’s merciful intimate voice speaking to me comforting, assurances that He is My Protector, Provider, Peace, Teacher and guide through the enabling of His Holy Spirit. Jesus’s calling & investment in the early disciples has inspired me personally with the great sense of responsibility entrusted to me.
