Knowing Jesus to Make Jesus Known

Hollie Roberts

BSF Executive Director | Sep 25, 2023

I love studying John’s Gospel. It was BSF’s John study that helped me see both truth and grace on display. I find it incredible how Jesus never shrinks back from truth for the sake of grace. Nor does He offer grace at the expense of truth.

As one who grew up with an inclination toward truth, I can honestly say, for years I didn’t understand the compatibility and beauty of both grace and truth. I believed I was saved by grace, no doubt. But a careful examination of my life, as well as my harsh assessment of the behavior of people around me, revealed a legalistic streak full of my idea of truth but lacking grace.

When God exposed the hardness in my heart and the depths of my pride, I surprisingly never felt more loved. Through life-changing truth and life-giving grace, Jesus transformed me from the inside out. Only God has the power to do that. I began to view life differently—and others noticed.

Many of you probably share my story. You have been confronted with the truth of God’s Word, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, you have been changed. As Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you hold to my teaching, you really are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

When we experience the freedom of holy truth and lavish grace, our joy is contagious. And that is my prayer for every BSF member who studies God’s Word. I pray we will be a people known for the unchanging truth and unending grace of Jesus. But we cannot get there on our own. Only the work of the Holy Spirit can truly change our hearts. So, as you study John’s Gospel, consider beginning with the following prayers.

“Jesus, help me know You.”

Throughout His ministry, Jesus taught men, women, and children from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. They heard His words and marveled at His miracles. They called Him teacher, healer, prophet, and miracle worker. They stood amazed, but many walked away unchanged. Though these men and women knew about Jesus, they failed to see Him as Messiah, Deliverer, Savior, and God in the flesh.

Like the crowds who followed Jesus, we can easily read the Gospel of John again and again, storing up more Bible knowledge. But Jesus invites us to experience something deeper. He doesn’t ask us to know about Him; He invites us to personally know Him. He does not simply tell us the truth; He is the truth. In John 14:6 Jesus clarified, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

To know Jesus is to be changed by Jesus. We don’t simply read His words; we know Him to be “the Word” (John 1). Will you prayerfully and intentionally approach your BSF study with a teachable heart?

“Jesus, help me make You known.”

For those early Christ followers, being dramatically changed by knowing Jesus automatically made Jesus known to others.

The men and women who believed that Jesus was Messiah, the Son of God, allowed the gospel to transform their thoughts and direct their actions. Every aspect of their lives—from family to finances—looked different. God used a few faithful followers to impact the world for eternity, and He continues to work through people like you and me today.

As you allow God’s Word to mold your thoughts, affections, and actions, the people around you will notice. I can’t help but wonder, what if every BSF member committed to make Jesus known? Imagine the global impact! And the beauty is we don’t have to look far for opportunities. God calls and equips His followers to love, serve, and share wherever we are with the people already in our lives.

Changed lives change lives

Working at BSF grants me the privilege of hearing stories of how God is using His Word to dramatically change lives. During our John study, we anticipate even more stories like these from real BSF members who witnessed life transformation and longed to know Jesus as a result.

“I first came to BSF because I saw what a change it had made in my neighbor’s attitude and behavior. BSF has been the greatest catalyst in my spiritual growth and walk with God. I know the Holy Spirit will teach me new truths through God’s Word. God has definitely used BSF to change me into the person that I want to be and I just keep on growing and learning!”

– Claudia

“My wife had attended BSF long before I did, and because she was taking time to study God’s Word each night, I was curious. I saw a changed woman, a happier, more contented woman. So, I joined a men’s group. It was then that I discovered my personal relationship with Christ Jesus! Before then, I had known a lot about Christ but didn’t know Him personally! Thank you, BSF. My time spent studying God’s Word, illuminated by God’s Holy Spirit, has literally saved my life!”

– Ronnie

As we seek to know Jesus and make Jesus known, may we be a people who reflect grace and truth. Will you join me in praying for others as Jesus prayed for us? “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their [the apostles’] message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:20-21).

  1. It is such a honor to study John’s Gospel. I love studying Jesus’s first Miracle at the Wedding Feast when Mary is concerned because they are running out of wine. It would be an embarrassment to ran out of vine in that culture so when Jesus arrive Mary tell Him. Mary knows who Jesus is even before the day he was born. Jesus and his disciples travel a long way. When his disciples see Jesus changes water to wine and his disciples see the transformation now they believe who he says he is, the Savior of the world. The importance of His First Miracle is the transformation of Life growing out of death which is symbolic of His Resurrection. Praise the Lord for leaving us the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Thank you for BSF. Grace, Kathie

  2. I joined BSF over 15 years ago. Because of my wifes illness I had to tya couple years off. My wife Chris is going some operations to see if they can save her life again. She is in stage four now and I could use a lot of prayers. Depending on how she does will determine whether or not I will come back this year. The disappointed part of this whole thing is no one has reached out to me. I loved the time I spent with BSF and I love everyone there.

  7. I am thankful a friend told me about BSF deep dives into the Word last year. I ran away from G-d for 3 1/2 decades then falling into heartbreaking despair for the 3rd time I no longer wanted to live. When I asked Him if He was real would He show me a miracle and He hasn’t stopped showing me miracles. However, the best miracle I received was the day I went to a church I had never been to before in Lincoln Ne and I happened to look at the cross during worship and actually found myself at the feet of Jesus. I can’t describe His love and purity, but I learned first hand He truly is full of grace, mercy and unconditional love for those who live in the darkness of this fallen world and I know when you get to the end of yourself, He brings you into the Father’s light. I remain thankful for Him as I discovered He prevented my death multiple times while I was walking without Him. In the 11 years I have been redeemed, I have discovered the deceits of the world just make me want more of Him and less of the world. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life that I now fully embrace.

  8. It is because of God’s grace I am learning the truth. My life has changed for the much better through BSF. I no longer see things the way I use to. I accepted Christ into my life at the age of 15 and it was a huge change and awakening for me at that time to be introduced to Christ. I loved Him from the moment I met Him but I
really didn’t know Him until my late 40’s. I had strayed away like a lot of us do. I thought I was walking with Him all along the way, but He was the one walking with me all along the way. He knew I would learn to have a personal relationship with Him and gain true understanding of His Word. I no longer have a religion. I have a personal relationship. I am not just a Christian, I am a Believer. I don’t just go to church for fellowship. I go to hear the Word. I joined church to be around other Believers and I worship with praise and love in my heart! BSF has taught me to study the Word, take it seriously, not just read it. I am bible believing and bible reading. I have introduced several people to the Lord through BSF. Thank you BSF for coming into my life at the age of 65! It’s never too late. 🙂

  9. The first time I studied John I did not think I had an attitude that is ready to embrace the truth and I thank God by His grace I have a second chance, to intentionally embrace the truth and know Him personally and to make Him known which was my forgotten motto many years ago. A few early disciples were able to change the then world
upsidedown. But instead I had allowed the world to change me upsidedown. I recalled the song “wasted years” Praise be to God He is able, I know He is able to change and transform even me now.

  16. My compliments to Hollie on her Introduction Lecture. Initially I was questioning her statements that Jesus was “the way to the truth”. Jesus IS the truth. Upon searching John’s gospel, I re-read Jesus’ statement the “I AM the way” and I finally understood what she was saying. In our world were truth seems subjective, Jesus is the only path to the absolute, undeniable truth.

    Well done!

  18. I grew up in a Christian family, my father was a priest in the Anglican Church (Episcopal). I attended church services regularly and participated fully in all church programmes but it wasn’t until in 2002, at age 50 when I joined BSF, that I had a personal experience with Jesus Christ my Lord and personal saviour. Since then family and friends have noticed the change in my life – my words, actions and lifestyle are all Christ-centred. I have joy and peace and contentment in my heart and my second marriage is thriving and happy because of my understanding of God’s word. I pray that the Holy Spirit will fill me with more grace and truth as we go through the study of John’s Gospel.

Above all, my life should be a testimony to bring others to Christ. Thank you Hollie for sharing.

  21. Hi, I have been in BSf for years. But I think the study I learned the most from and connected the dots to other parts of scripture was last years
” Kingdom Divided. I understand the old testament so much more now and with what our church has been studying right now, I can say they go together. I understand how it goes together. I am so thrilled.
I never really had much interest in the old testament, but new I wanted to study it, so I was so glad to have the study last year. I am now studying our Churches Theology class and its on Genesis. So its amazing how God opened the doors all at the right time to be studying the Old Testament back to back. I just love the way God opens the doors in our lives in the direction we should go at the right time.
Thankyou to BSF for all the great studies. Thank God for His many blessings in my life, I’m so grateful for each one, also grateful for the No’s he sends, for without them I wouldn’t realize the yeses.

  23. What a stunning illustration of the transformative power of God’s Word! Your journey through the Gospel of John’s delicate balance of truth and grace is profoundly inspiring. I, too, have struggled to comprehend the profound union of grace and truth, and your account provides a refreshing perspective. It is a powerful reminder that through genuine introspection and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, not only can we experience personal transformation, but we can also have a positive influence on those around us. As many of us delve into the depths of John’s Gospel, your reflections will guide us to the heart of Jesus. Thank you for sharing this profoundly personal insight. May we all embrace with open hearts the unchanging truth and eternal grace.

  24. Thank you Hollie, for this introduction to the study.
I truly yearn to learn “how Jesus never shrinks back from truth for the sake of grace”, while “His offer of grace is NOT at the expense of truth.”

I grew up with an inclination toward truth, I can honestly say, that I struggle with living the compatibility and beauty of both grace and truth. I believed I was saved by grace, no doubt. But a careful examination of my life, as well as my harsh assessment of the behavior of people around me, reveals a legalistic streak full of my idea of truth but lacking sufficient grace.

Having paraphrased the above to fit my self appraisal, I am truly inspired and highly motivated for the study of John. May the Lord transform me for His Glory.

This is something I read on line in Bible scripture. Do not even know where I found it, but I do think John was trying to help see the action of Jesus so we could know the Father better.

  37. I realize until I receive fully and comprehensively the Love of Jesus for myself, I can not truly love others. I find that many of my decisions in life have been influenced by my ego and agenda. To prove my worth and my rights in total opposition to submission to God and His Wisdom and His Agenda. It’s humbling yet invigorating because He will clear the path and He will do the saving and He will give the Holy Spirit Power to reach the hearts of Men and Woman and Children He can reach through me. Why do I think I’m too late or missed the moment? Why do I think that I’m the only one that has prayed and prayed and waited and waited for salvation to come. God patiently waits and so can I…..God has infinitely been aware of what is needed to reach the hearts of those that He puts across my path……can I not join Him and stop worrying that I have missed the moments. If anything, last Years BSF class taught me , Gods Word makes it clear that humans repeat themselves and go back into their dysfunctional patterns again and again. There is gonna be another opportunity. If not me than some other servant of God will have a go at sharing the truth in love towards them. He wants salvation for his children as much as I do if Not Deeper and Longer and More Fervently than I!! No DOUBT, I give up too easy and He never gives up.

She used to share the learnings and how BSF helped change her perception about gospel etc. I too was attracted to BSF, when the men’s classes started in our country. Now I am a GL. First time when I was given the opportunity to become a GL, I refused. But a year later, once again I was asked. This time, I requested for a week to think it over. After a careful thought, I wanted to once again refuse due to hectic work schedule, lack of Bible knowledge etc. While I was preparing to convey my unwillingness, I happened to watch a video narrating the life experiences of a Doctor who has been serving in God’s Ministry. One line which he spoke caught my attention “God doesn’t require your qualifications, skills or ability, HE only need your time’. I felt like, God was speaking to me directly. Without much thinking, I decided to serve as GL and wanted to inform the TL immediately after the video which I was watching. After I finished the video, I saw a message from TL reminding me about my decision. My answer was YES. I firmly belive it was God’s call. I am now very happy to serve as GL in BSF. All praise and honour to HIM.

I searched for a Bible study for years and BSF online came as a blessing for me. I attend a church that has Sunday service that is not in my mother tongue.
My sister who is a bsf leader in our country India told me 6 years back that BSF online is going to open up. Now here I’m for 5 years studying the word. I thirsted for the word of God very intensely. God blessed me with bsf right in the comfort of my home. I am blessed with a wonderful example of a leader- Becky White and a great group of prayer warriors who pray for each other sincerely. I thank God for His Amazing grace and peace 🙏

  63. I came to know Christ at the age of 60. I tried to read the Bible before asking Jesus to be My Savior and Lord – the words came alive and I understood them.

A friend invited me to BSF shortly after that and I began my journey with Jesus. The Holy Spirit is my teacher and he guides me daily. I have learned to ask him – over and over – for help and he hears me and answers my requests. I have made lifelong friends through fellowship with other members.

  68. Soo excited to be studying the Book of John!!! Hollie, I like how you say to make Jesus known. Jesus IN us can make Grace and Truth known to others (John 1: 17). I love the revealing of Jesus’ ID (GOD in a human body, John 1), the great ‘I AM’s (John 14: 6), the birth into the Body of Christ/Kingdom of GOD (John 3), the person of the Holy Spirit (John 14: 26) — and so much more is revealed in the Book of John, making it such a rich, and possibly, life transforming Book. Like you state, thru John, we not only know about Jesus, but are invited to personally know HIM. Studying with BSF helps me to keep my fellowship with GOD more alert, alive and lively (i.e., ALL it can be–abundant life). Thanks, BSF!

My prayer is for each of us to experience Holy Spirit’s Presence in a life-changing way as we study this year. May we, like the Samaritan woman at the well, be as excited and honored to share the Gospel. May we daily, boldly pray asking for divine appointments to lovingly share the Great News. God bless!

I am so excited to participate in BSF this year in the study of John with individuals who are: multidenominational, multicultural, multilingual and who possess varied degrees of spiritual maturity. Oh how good and pleasant it is for brethren to engage in the excellency of sharing in unity as we exalt the name of Christ. Our common denominator being our love and heart-pursuit of Jesus. I am so exuberant to see how God will illuminate HIS WORD via the Holy Spirit in this new season of my life; I am eagerly anticipating the truths and new revelations revealed in God’s Word; revelation which has always existed, but new seasons of life often result in the unveiling of new treasures from God’s Holy Script! Thank you to the entire Administrative Team for your leadership commitment to and in being the vessels, God has chosen to advance “kingdom work” through prayer and faithfulness.

I used to have reading comprehension problems and struggles understanding the Bible though I had been a Christian since early childhood. The BSF style of study, fellowship, lectures and small groups helped me overcome this challenge. I took my first BSF in 1982 in Long Beach, CA and have continued over the years while living in Louisville, KY, Carlsbad, CA and now Olympia, WA. I have been a Christian Calligrapher and Mixed Media Artist all my life. However the skills I learn through BSF enable me to create and share God’s Word effectively to non Christians and those struggling with their faith in God.

Folks that work with youngsters in church should never doubt the importance of what they do. I had the constant knowledge that God was in Heaven, and Jesus was with me. I can’t say that I was a whiz kid, that I learn the Bible backwards or anything like that, but my faith stayed with me always. I did not progress in my status as a Christian until I was much older. And now in my old age I have found BSF. I am making up for lost time and I am enjoying it tremendously. Thank you for providing the in depth courses of Bible study. It means I am growing closer to the Lord than ever before. I also commend BSF for the learning programs they have for youngsters. You may never know how much your efforts mean in the life of a child but it means more than you can imagine to Jesus.

  168. I would like to know where the lecture is that Hollie recorded for our BSF class this week. I would like to listen to it again and also help my friend find it who was out with a knee injury and couldn’t attend the first day.

    • Hi Virgina! If you are part of a class it is always available to you in mybsf.org (or bsfonline.org if that is where you get your lessons). Also in the app. You may have to go back to the Lesson 0 lesson to find it. Thanks!
