How to Seek Jesus While We Wait on Him

Living for Jesus in Everyday Life

May 1, 2024

Hollie Roberts

BSF Executive Director

Have you ever struggled through a season of waiting—feeling stuck between God’s work in the past and His promise for the future?

Two years ago, I faced a particularly difficult situation I couldn’t solve on my own. At the time, I was stunned. I wondered, “How could this be?” I prayed, and I waited. Today, I am still praying and still waiting. While my circumstances haven’t changed, God has done a mighty work in me through this season.

Because God works while His people wait.

As Christians, we wait for God to answer our prayers and meet our daily needs. We wait for Him to give us direction. We wait on Him to change the hearts of those we love. At times, the entire Christian life can feel like one big season of waiting—and that’s because it is.

The tension of “not yet,” “hold on,” and “there’s more to come” stretches far beyond our daily circumstances because we are living in the gap. We are placed between God’s work in the past and His promise for the future.

John’s Gospel reminds us to seek the truth, keeping our eyes fixed on the finished work of redemption through the cross. Revelation encourages us to wait in hope, focusing on the certain day when Jesus will return and make all broken things new.

So how do we remain steadfast while we wait?

Seek the Truth

Through John’s Gospel we get a clear view of who Jesus is. We see both His compassion and care as well as His power and glory. We reflect on His words and marvel at His miracles. We realize that Jesus was more than merely a teacher or a prophet.

{

When we seek the truth in God’s Word, we discover more than facts about Jesus; we discover Jesus Himself.

{

John 1:14 tells us, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Jesus alone has the power to fortify our faith and steady us while living in the gap.

He said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

When life’s storms threaten to distract us from the truth of who God is, a deep knowledge of what God has revealed in His Word anchors our faith and identity in Christ. When we seek the truth in God’s Word, we discover more than facts about Jesus; we discover Jesus Himself.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me'” (John 14:6).

I am convinced that one of the greatest dangers for our culture today is settling for the shallow end of Scripture. We begin to view personal Bible study as optional, when in fact, it is essential. While we live in the gap, waiting on God, we must remain anchored in Christ—and our surest way to remain in Him is to remain in His Word.

Wait in Hope

When we seek the truth found in Christ alone, we discover a hope greater than we could ever imagine. In this year’s BSF study, Revelation: The Hope, we will read about an eternity so wonderful that the trials of this life pale in comparison.

Revelation 5:9b-10 tells us, “…because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”

Imagine that beautiful reality. A kingdom of priests from every tribe and language and people and nation united by the blood of Jesus. Today, we weep and mourn. In eternity, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 21:4a).

We endure today because our hope rests in a certain tomorrow.

When we truly believe there is something worth waiting for and Someone who can deliver all that He promised, we find the strength to persevere.

In Christ, our hope is secure because the price of eternity has already been paid. Victory is sure for those who place their faith and hope in Jesus.

“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true'” (Revelation 21:5).

{

In this year’s BSF study, Revelation: The Hope, we will read about an eternity so wonderful that the trials of this life pale in comparison.

{

In John’s Gospel, we see God’s glory revealed in Jesus, the humble servant. In Revelation, we see God’s glory complete in Jesus, the conquering king.

As we seek the truth and wait in hope, we see glimpses of His glory as He continues to work in and through His people today.

When we feel stuck between God’s work in the past and His promise for the future, we remember that God always works while His people wait. When God answers, “not yet,” He strengthens our faith and increases our reliance on Him. While we wait, He calls us to action—to make Jesus known and share the hope wherever He has placed us.

God is our stability in the fiercest storms and trials. Jesus Himself is our truth and hope as we long to experience the full measure of His glory as revealed in Revelation.

“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp” (Revelation 21:23).

  2. I have really enjoyed the study of John which is my favourite book. During the 30 weeks we moved house and my husband had an emergency double bypass operation on his heart. The scriptures came alive with comfort and hope and reassurance and the wonderful prayer support from my BSF group strengthened me. May God continue to richly bless this ministry and all those involved sharing Jesus and His light with the world. Sending heartfelt thanks and blessings to you all.

  3. I have truly enjoyed my study with BSF. I started when Revelation was being studied (I can’t remember the date). I am very diligent in studying the Bible which I may not have searched as deeply if I were not in BSF! I love studying the Scripture and searching for “Truth.” I want to always be ready to give my hope in Jesus, The Christ. My prayer is to gain faith like the 3 Hebrew boys! This is my hope because I know persecution for Believers will become worse than what it is now. I want to be ready so I will not fear any punishment!

Now I’ve understood Jesus’s “I am” statements and see how they are manifested in my life as a believer. And can more confidently testify to others about Christ. I am eagerly looking forward to the Book of Revelations.
Many thanks to you Hollie and the team at BSF for all you do to grow us and keep us grounded in The Word. May God bless you.

I feel so undirected not having a summer plan and am overwhelmed comprehending scripture and keeping up once we begin in the fall.

Do you offer any mini plans or recommend additional readings that link Revelation to The Old and New Testaments that we may dive into over summer?

Five years ago I had my foot amputated through diabetes and as a result BSF has been the catalyst for me to study the Scriptures and this latest study on John has been such a blessing especially when you consider the suffering Christ went through on the cross for me a sinner.
I really praise the Lord for the opportunities Christ has given me because of my amputation I pray that I will not be silent. Looking forward to the study bin Revelation in the fall. Praying for the continual growth of BSF worldwide

  26. What a beautiful post this was to read! AMEN!! What an AMAZING year of feeding on the Lord by the word of truth with BSF through the book of John! The just have always lived by their faith in God in either Covenant. It is God who is righteous, faithful and true. CHRIST IS our sure hope and we have entered spiritually into God’s Kingdom through Christ our rest, filled by His Spirit, it is ALL about Him. No more wandering, but it is Christ who is the WAY. HE has done it, is doing it and WILL complete the God work He has started in us until we see HIM face to face and that not yet of the new heavens and earth!! He came to destroy Satan’s works from the curse at the fall of Adam by fulfilling the Law and the Prophets and we are those who abide in the true vine! HE IS RETURNING SOON! God bless you all who love His appearing! Praying with you for our loved ones, may He grant them the repentance of faith in Christ’s righteousness unto salvation according to His kindness!

We are currently waiting as well. We live in the country and depend on a well for our water. We have lived here for 17 years and have had to replace our well pump 4 times and now it went out again. We don’t have the 16 grand to replace it this time. We don’t know what to do but pray.
We know that God will supply our needs, but I have to tell you, it is tough waiting. but wait we will, and our hope is in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

    Thanks again.

  35. Thank you for this! While waiting, circumstances may not change but God changes us in the circumstances. And I cherish the Lord’s changing me before the circumstances change. Then I am ready to faithfully hold and account for the changes circumstances. Our sovereign Lord is wise and His timing perfect.

John was an experience that has left indelible marks in me as a person. There’s too much in John for me to isolate aspects of this experience. I’m not the same as when the study began.

So I wonder at the experience that awaits me in Revelation. It’s a great anticipation sometimes excited and sometimes sobered.

May the Lord draw more hungry and broken souls to BSF to find rest and fulfillment in Jesus

  36. How are we to get the Kingdom of Heaven into our hearts without the Spirit’s Daily Application of His Living Word to our lives? Thank you through all the brilliantly written notes and spoken lectures for showing me through “John” that Jesus, “The Truth” is My Source of Life & Joy, without which I’d be terribly miserable, fearful, judgmental and likely stagnant.

  37. I am so grateful that BSF entered my life! I was attending service one Sunday in January when the preacher directed us to Revelation 1:12-18, it was at that moment KING JESUS, was revealed to me! My eyes were opened to who JESUS is NOW, He was no longer the baby in the manger and the man that walked the earth as GOD but truly KING OF GLORY! So the study of John really opened my understanding of JESUS the man who knows what it means to feel the emotions of humanity and remain GOD-focused and not lose anyone Father GOD has entrusted to Him. I hear so many radio preachers talk about heaven that my longing has increased tremendously but should Jesus tarry, I can’t wait to study Revelation with BSF!!!!

I appreciate what you had to say about keeping our focus on the Lord. One of my favorite people in Bible history is Peter and his heart governed by the Lord Jesus, who lovingly forgave him, for his short comings and impulsive behavior, when Peter stepped into the water, he took his eyes off of Jesus and sank. So again thank you for reminding us to keep our eyes and our focus on the Lord.

I know and trust that the Lord will give you the desires of your heart and I pray Psalm 91 over you and your family! God Bless you!

  39. I’m glad I am not alone in the waiting. It’s hard and uncomfortable but GOD has done great things in the wait. BSF Bible study has been a great way to keep my eyes on Jesus and my mind on heaven while I wait. The Holy Spirit convinces me to change in the areas where change is needed. GOD gives me hope in the waiting which helps me to push through. There is community through church and through BSF. I have people to help share the burden as they pray for me. I get my mind off of me when I pray for them. I am inspired by their testimonies through their experience with GOD’s word and His presence. Waiting with GOD and His word and His people has allowed me to not give up. Thank you for your commitment to lead us through Bible study.

To wait cheerfully we need the power of the Holy Spirit, and while waiting we need to use the armor of God specially because the deceiver uses his arrows of doubt, anger, impatient. We have to plug ourselves to the plowed of the Resurrected Christ. What is humanly impossible is possible for Christ. Patience and humble obedience are the keys for victory.

  75. To understand answered prayers, we need to comprehend how the Almighty works in our lives.
Yes, He hears our prayers & answers in His time in the best way. Your career, your spouse, children etc.are all in His plan. I have realised that everything he did for me was perfect. The peace , joy & rest in my spirit is the outcome. You just have to submit to the Almighty. Then He begins to work in you.

    • I too have been in Hollies place and I can tell you all that, though it was not pleasant and very disturbing to my life and my family, I gave it completely to God and trusted Him to do the work for His glory only and I saw so many miracles that it moved me to a whole other level of my relationship with the Holy Trinity that has never left me. And now I still look back (almost ten years ago) and know that because of what God showed me and taught me, I would gladly go through it again just to become as I am more trusting and stronger in the truth and love of my Lord.

  78. Good Morning,
I’ve just completed the study of John at The Fellowship Church off of Canyon Golf.

I wanted to send a note about Mandy Pallock, ATL. What a gifted teacher she is. I never failed to have goose bumps, tears, and laughter each time she taught. Sound teaching with a humble delivery that both convicts and encourages.

    What a gift.

  90. While waiting for Jesus’ resurrection, John worked to prepare the place for the last supper (Luke 22:8). He picked up the leftover food after the feeding of the 5,000 (Jn 6:12). He took care of Jesus’ mother (Jn 19:27).

While waiting to receive the crown of righteousness (2 Tim 4:7), Paul endured hardship and suffering (2 Cor 11:25-29).

While waiting to go to the place prepared for us, Isaiah 28:23-30 reminded us that there is ploughing, sowing, leveling, scattering and then the harvesting. The Lord says, this also comes from the Lord of hosts.

The three ‘I AM’ statements that pertain to life is not just future oriented but includes now – being faithful to the Lord in daily living just as Isaiah says, ‘this also comes from the Lord of hosts.’

Specifically the Word of God becoming flesh and dwelling amongst us,(John 1:11-13) and the Word of God ruling as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Rev 19:11-16), fulfilling the Messianic prophecies of Psalm 2.

His answer may be “yes”, “no”, “wait”, “not yet,” “hold on,” and/or “there’s more to come” etc. It is for me to trust His answer and wait in hope for Him to reveal, and guide me to the next steps in my life (even when His answers are hard).

I’ve known this for years but this study has ingrained it in my heart. And I am thankful for this. I thank the Lord for BSF, the leaders in my class and the gals. Stay in God and He will stay in you. Accept His forgiveness and sin no more. Ask for help when tempted but know He loves and forgives us.

I would encourage you with the promise of Romans 8:1, where Paul writes, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

God has taught me there is tremendous POWER in speaking Scripture out loud. Speak Romans 8:1 out loud and claim to it as God’s precious promise to you! The Holy Spirit will minister to your soul and spirit as you walk in obedience to Christ’s commands.

Yes .We have seen the truth in the book of John. That Jesus was the son of God who came and lived among us , He died for our sins so that we may be forgiven.

  166. “Wait in hope” thank you for this introduction to the Revelation study.

Many years ago when I was a TL in TX my Area Advisor reminded me when I was in a particular “waiting period” in my life; “Worse than waiting God’s timing is wishing you had”.

It is nice to keep praying with hope as I wait. I wait upon God will as the best for me and my family.
For the past two years I have prayed for my son Solomon to rekindle his love for Jesus and return back to the fold of saved by Grace.

  169. This study was very informative for me. I have read the Bible 9 times, I think it is, but have never delved into the deep study as the study of John has been. The group discussions were so interesting and enlightening. It was such fun the last day: a 4 generation family photo. Of course my great grandson wasn’t a part of the study but he was there in the childcare section.

to wait for His coming as it says in the Bible.

  171. Thank you, Hollie, i too am in a season of waiting. I have been in hard times for years. I see God’s active amazing presence in the middle of it all. I see His perfect love, perfect timing, and provisions. I couldn’t do this without Him. BSF is a way of study that brings His truth and hope, and fellowship is valuable.

  172. I came to BSF under protest! My friend would not take “no” for an answer. 50 years later I am still being taught the Truth, and loving it beyond human words. God bless and keep you. May His face shine upon you and give you His peace. THANK YOU!

  173. Not optional. A worldview that glorifies God becomes ours as we sit at the feet of the Lord, the Christ, the Messiah.
Not optional. A focus on the Truth requires listening to the Word of God and doing what it says.
    Not optional.
I am planning to obey and trust as the Word permeates my soul.

  174. I have an auto immune problem that prevents me from eating food and I’ve been on tube feeding for five years. God will enable me to eat normally when he’s ready. In the meantime while I wait, He uses my problem to give me multiple opportunities to witness as to God’s joy, strength, and hope for my future

  175. Hollie, This is the most beautiful words I have read from an individual. These words certainly teach me to understand just how much we are loved and why our Lord and Savior will always be with me thru my struggles in life. I am so blessed to have been in BSF classes for the last 10 years. I truly pray for many more years to come with our classes.

“When we feel stuck between God’s work in the past and His promise for the future, we remember that God always works while His people wait. When God answers, “not yet,” He strengthens our faith and increases our reliance on Him. While we wait, He calls us to action—to make JESUS known and share the HOPE wherever He has placed us.”
