How Does Isaiah Speak Today?

God promised salvation to a people headed for destruction. Isaiah’s “Servant Songs” offered hope and they continue to speak to us today.

(Transcript) Isaiah Chapter 42, verses 1 through 9, is the first of what some call the “Servant Songs” in the book of Isaiah. There are four of them, and the Servant Songs describe one who is coming using this servant language. Sometimes the servant language is used in Scripture to describe Israel, but these four servant songs clearly describe a different, unparalleled servant, one who will actually do perfectly what Israel was unable to do perfectly. And each Servant Song has a specific focus, and together they paint a picture — the Messiah, the one who is coming to save.

So, in Chapter 42, verses 1 through 9, we get a bit about the person and the work of the servant: “Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged until he establishes justice on earth. And in his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

What God’s promises reveal

God is saying His servant will be His chosen one for Israel and for the nations. And then in this servant, in his teaching, you will find hope, justice, and deliverance. Now God speaks about what the servant will do as if God is speaking about Himself — this servant, unparalleled, unrivaled, unlike all others. God extends hope through the servant language that He will save His people. Listen to how it keeps going and how it changes.

“This is what God the Lord says — the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spread out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to who walk on it: ‘I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness.’” So while He starts by talking about this servant, He shifts to say, “I the Lord, have called you in righteousness. I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind and free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory [or praise] to another.”

God is holding out hope to a rebellious people. God is promising a servant, one like no other, to a rebellious people. God promises justice to a people prone to injustice. God promises people a salvation they cannot accomplish themselves. And as we read these Servant Songs understanding what we know about the rest of Scripture, we see this can only be talking about Jesus. In fact, Jesus will actually attribute some of these verses to Himself in the gospel accounts when John the Baptist says, “Is it really you?” Actually, it’s John the Baptist who sends his disciples to say, “Is it really you? Are you the one we’ve been waiting on?”

You know what God is telling us here is God is revealing who He is. And frankly, we make so many mistakes and misjudgments in life because we don’t really understand who God is. We are anxious and fearful and without hope when we do not rightly understand God. Let me say it differently. We do not have to be anxious, fearful, or hopeless when we rightly understand who God is. You see, we cannot and will not know true comfort when we do not understand who God is.

Why our view of God matters

Are you struggling in this world? Maybe it’s because of how you view God. Maybe it’s because you are searching for comfort in the wrong places and people and outcomes. God builds a case for all people, explaining who He is and that no idol can compare. And that reveals a critical truth that rises from this passage. The truth is God’s heart to save is revealed in who He is. God’s heart to save is revealed in who He is.

Have you ever felt misjudged because you were misunderstood? Or maybe I should say it this way: hasn’t everyone at some point felt misjudged because they were misunderstood? God’s salvation is tied up in who God is; and when you take the time to learn about God and who He is, then you begin to see Him rightly.

I know you must want to know about God because you’re studying with us at BSF. You don’t come here because you don’t want to know about God. And let me tell you that the journey to knowing God is like going into the ocean. You can start with your toe, you can go in ankle deep, you can go waist-high, or you can spend the rest of your life attempting to plumb the depths of the ocean.

Some of us have gotten comfortable in the position where we are, but I would ask you would you receive God’s invitation to come deeper, to grow deeper in your knowledge of Him, to continue on this journey of learning. If you are one toe in, would you come ankle deep? If you are waist deep, would you go in neck deep? If you are neck deep, would you just dive in?

You know, I don’t know how you view God right now, but I promise you that when you dive in to get to know Him, you will find a gracious, compassionate, loving, wise, eternal, just, and unchanging God. And you will realize on that journey that God’s heart to save is because of who He is, and His heart to save is accomplished by what He has done.

  18. Thank you for this overview of Isaiah – so many parallels pointing to Jesus, especially in episode 1 when it was said, “… this man surrendered his comfort, surrendered his rights, surrendered his clothes and ultimately surrendered his life. He remained faithful to God regardless of the cost.” The same fitting description of Jesus who surrendered His all to become the bond servant to God; He was the one who surrendered His life and rose victorious over sin and death.

    • Brenda, I think it is John 12:37-41

      Reply
    • John 12:41- some Bible versions state “he (Isaiah) saw Jesus’ glory & spoke about Him”, other versions state “he saw His glory & spoke of Him”
Another version states “he saw His glory & spoke about the future Messiah.”
In context w/other scripture God’s glory is revealed thru Jesus. Heb 1:3 “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory & the exact representation of His being.”
Col 1:15 “The Son is the image of the invisible God”
Col 2:9 “In Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.”
The msg God seems to continually reveal, is that while we are still on earth, man (Isaiah, others & us) can only “see” God the Father is thru Jesus the Son.
It aligns w/ many other scriptures to think, when Isaiah saw “the glory of the Lord”, he was seeing it thru Jesus. Thus the ref to John 12:41 -meaning Isaiah saw Jesus.

GOD gave us a free will in the Garden of Eden, HE doesn’t make us do anything; this is a testament of our love for Him. What are we willing to sacrifice?

  49. Thank you for these wonderful messages. They are helpful and encouraging, because, even though you speak of Isaiah, your point us to our holy eternal God. You challenge us to see him in his glory and worship him and his holiness. You remind us that we could never plumb the depths of his word, and never fully understand his majesty, and yet our God of love longs for us to be near to him. Your teachings make me want to know him better and love him more, running the race, with my eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. To him be all glory, honor and praise. Thank you again.

Yes how I view God truthfully I was more comfortable Before diving in I feel I’m over my head how I view God you ask I have more questions disturbing questions for instance Why would God ask Isaiah to prophecy to these people knowing it would be in vain…and then murdered.what does God really want from us we are sinners we will always be sinners we are weak humans and we can repent but we sin again and again when does God turn away from us…we are flawed I believe but like any child I have questions.

    • There were a lot of good questions in your post, Judy. Tonight IPSF group talked about one of the things you addressed Dash what use was it for Isaiah to spend his whole life proclaiming a message that people did not listen to. We talked about the remnant that was mentioned at the end of chapter 6, so we know that, although most did not heed the Lord’s calling through Isaiah, some did. Then we also talked about the truth. That many through the generations have been brought to faith by the words that God proclaimed through Isaiah. Verses from Isaiah have awakened Jews and Gentiles alike to our need for a savior, and the realization that he is Jesus the Messiah. We talked about the text and ask where the Ethiopian eunuch was reading Isaiah 53 and not understanding it, and Philip came to him and explain the text and the man came to faith… end. It is still happening today.
We prefer to see the fruit of our labors more quickly, but the Lord, I believe continues to bring fruit from the amazing words that he gave Isaiah to share with all generations.

  71. Dear Hollie,
I am awe-struck by the message you recorded as an introduction for us to the book of Isaiah.
I had been introduced to this book earlier in a previous study by BSF, but this introductory perspective is so revealing and most helpful to prepare me to prep the members in the group assigned to me to shepherd as a Group Leader in BSF Hong Kong.
I am sure I will benefit greatly from the questions BSF HQ has selected in the 4 lessons assigned for Isaiah, and hope to be able to gain the correct insight of this precious word of God that describes His true self to us.
I will pray earnestly that the passages will speak to me through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to enable me to transmit the correct message to my group members.
Once again let me thank you and BSF for all your hard work and dedication to enable His word to be disseminated to all who are willing to listen, which goes towards responding to our Saviour’s Great Commission in the last chapter of Matthew.
    Blessings and in Gratitude,

BSF has changed my life and given me a much deeper love for Christ and his kingdom over the 12 years I have been involved. 98. Hi Hollie. Thank you for background info on the Book of Isaiah. To me, Isaiah was the Book in the OT that I found to be difficult to understand as the Book of Revelation was in the NT. I now know that I missed so many truths by leaning on my own understanding not the understanding of wanting to know Father God, embrace His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to open my eyes to the truth. I’m more toward the end of my life now and I embraced His saving grace when I was in my 30’s. I’m always learning more and more about this life in Christ. I will always be under construction until I’m not😊. Again, thank you and BSF for honoring Him and encouraging people in the family of God to do the same!

  103. Thank you for these messages on Isaiah Hollie! So blessed that the book of Isaiah is included in PPKD!

Isaiah chapter six and other passages remind me of how I should prepare my heart for worship, both daily and on Sunday mornings. Too much of the time on Sunday mornings, I’m just trying to get out the door, and over to church and in my seat, feeling somewhat put together physically.

What is even more important is having a vision of the God we are worshiping, high and lifted up, wonderfully holy, glorious beyond words, and remembering my unclean state.

Posting reminders to self from Isaiah 6 to hopefully affect how I approach and worship the Lord.

There is an upside to being humbled by God. We can become those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. You are absolutely correct that we don’t pan on our lives going from riches to rags, from respect to rejection. Help!

This life as a believer is indeed a mystery- a journey into the unknown with a God who has committed Himself to us. Glory be to His Name forever and ever.

  153. That was fabulous! I was in BSF as a group leader when we did Isaiah. It was difficult, but I grew so much that year. I have been in an Isaiah study at our church, but went back to my old notes to gain better understanding of what was trying to be said!

I am so thankful for the way BSF teaches the true Word ofGod!
